Abstract

Mexico is a world leader in avocado production and export; but plants are susceptible to Phytophthora cinnamomi and Fusarium oxysporum. This study evaluated the effect of Arthrobacter agilis UMCV2 on avocados inoculated with P. cinnamomi and F. oxysporum in: a) an in vitro dual confrontation assay, and b) the effect of the following treatments on the plants, a control (C), inoculation with A. agilis (Aa), P. cinnamomi (Pc), and F. oxysporum (Fo), and the combinations AaPc and AaFo. Growth rate, root collar diameter, dry aerial and root biomass, mortality, and wilt percentage were evaluated. With a Student's t-test, statistical differences were found under in vitro conditions. Using an ANOVA, significant differences were found in the growth rate, wilting percentage, and mortality. The bacteria promoted growth and exerted a biocontrol effect under in vitro conditions and in the plants.
