Abstract

The objective was to determine the influence of heat stress on
post-immunization adverse effects in Holstein-Friesian calves. 547 calves were immunized at seven dairy farms in Torreón, Coahuila, Mexico. The development of adverse reactions was recorded, and the ITH (Temperature Humidity Index) was calculated. 6.4% (n = 35) calves presented adverse reactions. Of these, 25.7% (n = 9) died. The highest number of deaths (n = 3) was observed between 90 and 120 min, as well as that one of the commercial batches produced half of the reactions. It was observed that heat stress influences the time of appearance of adverse reactions; a moderate-severe level affects older calves (60 d) with a longer onset time (90 min); and a lower level of stress affects younger calves (32 d) with faster onset signs (32.5 min).
