      Abstract

Capsicum annuum is a species of agricultural and biotechnological importance; however, its recalcitrance has limited the processes of genetic transformation and agroinoculation mediated by Agrobacterium tumefaciens. The objective of this study was to characterize the response of 29 accessions of C. annuum, with different levels of domestication (wild, semi-wild, semi-domesticated and domesticated), to A. tumefaciens GV3101 infection. The plants were inoculated and evaluated at 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 days after inoculation (dai). The severity of galling was recorded using a visual scale of 0-3 (0 = No galls, 3 = differentiated galls), and the incidence of affected plants and the area under the disease progression curve (AUDPC) were estimated. Bacterial reisolates were also performed to confirm the identity of the causative agent. The analysis of factorial variance showed a significant effect of time on the progression of galling (p < 0.001), but no significant differences were detected between accessions or between domestication groups (p > 0.05). Reisolation confirmed the presence of A. tumefaciens in the tumor tissues. In conclusion, compatibility with A. tumefaciens is relatively homogeneous in C. annuum, regardless of the degree of domestication, which indicates that bacterial infection is not the main limitation and provides useful information for the design of agroinoculation protocols for phytopathogenic viruses.
