Selection of Streptomyces sp. to cope with biotic and abiotic stress in Nicotiana tabacum L.

Actinomycetes, tobacco, salinity and drought stress, antagonistic activityAbstract
Climate change intensifies the effects of biotic and abiotic stress on plant growth and productivity; drought and salinity are two relevant abiotic inducers that affect agricultural productivity. The antagonistic activity of Streptomyces sp. (strains B8, EA2, CB14, CD24) against phytopathogenic fungi isolated from tobacco plants (Nicotiana tabacum L.) was evaluated, as well as its in vitro tolerance to different concentrations of sodium chloride (NaCl), pH, and polyethylene glycol-600 (PEG), and its effect on the germination of N. tabacum L. seeds. The results of the in vitro bioassay showed a broad antagonistic spectrum against Fusarium spp. and Phytophthora nicotianae, which affect tobacco crops. All actinomycetes strains grew under different stress conditions (NaCl, pH, and PEG). The results obtained regarding tobacco seed germination parameters indicate that the best treatment was Streptomyces sp. CD24, as it stimulated the germination rate, germination energy, and germination speed index. Streptomyces spp. strains constitute a novel alternative to maintain and increase the growth and productivity of tobacco crops, in order to alleviate and mitigate the effects of salinity and drought stress.
