        Abstract

In southeastern Mexico, the sedentary endoparasitic nematode Meloidogyne incognita parasitizes cucurbits, inducing varying degrees of virulence. The objective was to evaluate the response of regional cucurbits to M. incognita parasitism. Seedlings of Lagenaria siceraria, Cucurbita moschata, C. argyrosperma, C. pepo, Cucumis melo, C. sativus, and Citrullus lanatus variety "Cal sweet" were transplanted into pots and inoculated with 5 000 larval eggs of M. incognita. After 53 days inoculation, the galling index (GI), nematode reproduction, and agronomic variables were estimated. L. siceraria showed a lower GI (1-10%), with 10 and 267 females and eggs per gram of root, respectively. The largest stem diameter (5.47 and 5.15 mm) was recorded in L. siceraria and C. moschata, and the longest guide length in L. siceraria, C. melo, and C. moschata (102.50, 93.25, and 92.50 cm). L. siceraria shows potential as a rootstock tolerant to M. incognita.
