Abstract

In cotton, phytophagous and entomophagous bugs are present, but basic information about them is insufficient. The objective of this study was to identify and determine the population dynamics of the cotton bug complex. The crop was established in three locations in the Comarca Lagunera: Luchana, Coahuila (LC); Venecia, Durango (FAZ); and Matamoros, Coahuila (INIFAP), under two treatments: without pest control (untreated control) and with chemical pest control (applications of the insecticide Flonicamid), with four replications per treatment. Weekly sampling of the bug complex was conducted using a sweep net, performing 25 sweeps per replication, for a total of 100 sweeps per treatment. The data obtained were subjected to analysis of variance under a completely randomized design with split plots. The densities of most bug species showed significant differences among sampling dates and locations. Among phytophagous species, Lygus spp. (53-96%) were the most abundant, while among entomophagous species, Rhinacloa spp. (51-72%) predominated across all locations. Lygus spp. reached its population peak at 102 DAS (3.5 insects per 25 sweeps), whereas Rhinacloa spp. also peaked at 102 DAS (7.7 insects per 25 sweeps). Matamoros recorded the highest abundance and presented all bug species compared to the other locations. Flonicamid reduced the densities of Lygus spp. and Pseudatomoscelis seriatus, but did not affect the densities of entomophagous bugs, except for Rhinacloa spp.
