The response of habanero pepper (Capsicum chinense Jacq.) to copper nanoparticles (Cu-NPs) application was analyzed by assessing enzymatic activity, bioactive compounds, capsaicinoids, and Cu concentration. The experiment was conducted using a completely randomized design with four treatments: a control and three Cu-NPs concentrations (2, 4, and 6 mg L-1), with five replicates per treatment. Foliar applications began 20 days after transplanting and were repeated at 15-day intervals, for a total of four applications. Fruit yield, bioactive compound content, enzymatic activity, and Cu concentration were determined in the harvested fruits. The highest concentration (6 mg L-1) significantly increased peroxidase activity (87%), antioxidant capacity (48%), total flavonoids (42%), and dihydrocapsaicin biosynthesis (22%). The intermediate concentration (4 mg L-1) increased catalase activity by 79%, whereas capsaicin and total phenol contents were not affected by the treatments. The intermediate and highest concentrations (4 and 6 mg L-1) increased Cu accumulation in the fruits by up to 20%, indicating a concentration-dependent response and potential for biofortification. Fruit yield did not differ significantly among treatments. Cu-NPs may enhance the antioxidant system, bioactive metabolites, and Cu concentration without affecting fruit production.
