CAERI 4, a new cocoa variety for production areas in Mexico

        Abstract

        The “CAERI 4” cocoa clone originated from the cross between the Baalam x CATIE R6 cocoa clones, carried out at the INIFAP Rosario Izapa Experimental Field. It was evaluated in three environments (Tuxtla chico and Umoa, Chiapas and Teapa, Tabasco) and showed stability in most yield components, primarily the variables NST, IM, IS, yield tree-1 and yield per hectare. This indicates no interaction between the CAERI 4 clone and the environments; an important characteristic when releasing a new variety to producers. CAERI-4 is characterized by its tolerance to moniliasis (SE = 0.29 and SI = 044) and good yield (more than 1000 kg.ha-1). The CAERI 4 cacao clone was developed to facilitate the renewal of cacao plantations in Mexico, where moniliasis has reduced production, led to the abandonment of plots, consequently, changes in land use.
