Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium of public health importance due to its high mortality rate. Citronellol is a compound that has demonstrated interesting antimicrobial and antibiofilm effects; however, the effect against L. monocytogenes has not been entirely explored. This study aimed to determine the antimicrobial and antibiofilm effects of citronellol against L. monocytogenes. The antimicrobial effect of citronellol was determined by the broth microdilution method and plate inoculation. Antibiofilm effect was determined throughout crystal violet and viable count methods. The results showed that citronellol exhibited a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and bactericidal concentration (MBC) of 400 and 500 µg mL-1, respectively, against L. monocytogenes. Citronellol showed the capacity to reduce the biofilm formation process (>40% at a 1/2 MIC) and eradicating preformed biofilms (>30% at the doses evaluated) of L. monocytogenes. Citronellol reveals antimicrobial and antibiofilm effect against L. monocytogenes.
